BIOGRAPHY

 

          Mike McCarthy is a Physician Assistant practicing family, preventative, and industrial medicine in Port Huron, MI.    His wife, Andrea , also works in town as a nurse at Mercy Hospital.  They are members of St. Mary Church and St. Joseph Church in Port Huron, involved in music ministry at both churches.  They’re blessed parents of four active involved young adults.

In the early seventies Mike was an organizer for Cesar Chavez' United Farm Workers union, and in the early 90's they as a family moved to work in migrant health care clinics in California. They have long worked on peace, justice and disarmament issues, and for the first 15 years of their 28 years of marriage they redirected their federal income tax to peace efforts.  They most often minimized their war tax liability by making less money in their professions, trading that for time spent in peacemaking, and for a one year peace sabbatical created Christian Peace Education, a local rural nonprofit effort.

            Mike was six years a state committee member of Michigan Pax Christi {a national Catholic peace and justice organization}.  Major efforts in the past few years, as part of Blue Water Pax Christi, have been to be involved, and invite others, especially young people, to become part of local and international peacemaking efforts.   He tries to keep intellectual balance, and is a regular reader of the Wall Street Journal.

            Most recently, both Ande and Mike have gone to Chiapas, Mexico, Mike five times in the past eight years, in support of nonviolent efforts by the church and oppressed indigenous community in the Zona Norte, and to work in their medical clinic.  Mike has written numerous letters to the editor, and op-eds, to local and national publications, on topics deriving from all the above experiences.
