| One of the benefits of growing up on a farm, is that you get to know your father as a co-worker. While we didn't spend much time fishing, hunting or vacationing, we spent enormous amounts of time in day to day work activities. Milking cows daily, provided lots of time for communication...and on the Frendt farm we were involved in sports dialogue and oftentimes in political debate. This debate was oftentimes carried over to the dinner table, where mom would weigh in. I remember when Timothy Leary was on the college speaking circuit promoting the use of LSD, and dad being upset that he could use this venue to promote his cause - Dick took the opposing view, stating that it was a First Amendment issue...not your normal dinner debate. Later, I developed a libertarian facet to my genetic conservatism (we were born Republicans, and learned at a very early age from Grandpa Edgette that Democrats were "sons-of-bitches", especially Roosevelt and Truman). I opposed the draft, and I believe I finally converted Dad to my view. I wasn't as successful with many of my other opinions, and can remember Dick and Bob contributing (they were closest in age to me during my years in the barn), to the various debates. These discussions incubated a life long interest in political philosophy and economic principles, and the corresponding desire to debate the same. It is with this view that I propose that the debate continue and, if successful, to be extended to the next generation. Jerry | |||||

No. It is unfortunate that the decision is being made as these companies stand on the edge, but it is the belief on their part, shared with the UAW, that politicians would "cave in" that bought them to this timing. Forty years ago, GM was the largest company in the world. Liberals, at that time, wanted to break it up, as it was too big. No need for that now. GM has approximately 610 million shares of common stock, and has 146 billion in assets. If the stock price were to go to $1.00, some billionaire, or group, could buy the whole company and restructure its operating model. The people with most at stake - stockholders, UAW, retirees, bond holders, dealerships, suppliers and politicians at every level, need to review how this company can survive, compete and be profitable. In 1970, the UAW strike lasted for 68 days, and resulted in a 13% wage increase. After a lengthy shutdown, both sides were feeling bruised, but production and marketing resumed. I believe that 60 days of shut down, or more, if that's what it took, would result in a restructuring that would likely result in a realistic operating plan, without taxpayer assistance.

| Question 2 (Submitted by Local Opinion) PRESENT THREE IDEAS YOU WOULD INCORPORATE TO REDUCE THE COST OF RUNNING STATE GOVERNMENT? | |||||
|
NO RESPONSE |
NO RESPONSE |
In the past two years the current administration has failed in the
attempt to truly reform state government. We have huge cost savings
available to us thru Privatization
Cost savings exist thru consolidation of departments as well, for example, we could reduce our 14 HR departments into one. I believe if we put all state spending on line for the taxpayer to review, it would force government to maintain responsible spending limits. |
NO RESPONSE |
1 Freeze pay on all state employees,
until property values increase and unemployment decreases.
2 Freeze hiring in all state agencies. 3. Implement cost saving ideas as presented by the Mackinaw Center. |

| Question 3 (Submitted by Local Opinion) DO YOU FAVOR A UNICAMERAL LEGISLATURE WITH EXTENDED TERM LIMITS? | |||||
|
NO RESPONSE |
NO RESPONSE |
I do support modification of term limits, but do not support the concept of Unicameral Legislature. |
NO RESPONSE |
Michigan is one of only a few states whose legislature is in session full time. Texas, a larger and more vibrant state, has a legislature that meets for 140 days, every other year. They are paid $7,200. I would favor a part-time, unicameral legislature with term limits of 12 years. |

We support the appointment of judges who respect traditional family values and the sanctity and dignity of innocent human life. | DEMOCRATIC PLATFORM: The Democratic Party strongly and unequivocally supports Roe v. Wade and a woman's right to choose a safe and legal abortion, regardless of ability to pay, and we oppose any and all efforts to weaken or undermine that right. | I believe life begins at conception. Abortion should only be an option in case of the life of the mother. | DEMOCRATIC PLATFORM: The Democratic Party strongly and unequivocally supports Roe v. Wade and a woman's right to choose a safe and legal abortion, regardless of ability to pay, and we oppose any and all efforts to weaken or undermine that right. | I believe in the right to life and would oppose any legislation favoring abortion. | DEMOCRATIC PLATFORM: The Democratic Party strongly and unequivocally supports Roe v. | Question 5 (Submitted by Steve Kearns) WHAT IS YOUR POSITION ON GUN CONTROL? | |||||
| NO RESPONSE | NO RESPONSE |
I support the second amendment and am proud to be the only candidate endorsed by the National Rifle Association with an "A" Rating. |
I am a supporter of the Second Amendment right to own firearms. Michigan’s economy receives a large boost from hunting, shooting competitions and other gun-related activities. The right to own a gun extends to protecting individuals’ safety as well. |
I fully support the National Rifle Association's position as it relates to the right to bear arms and to own guns. I favor the concealed weapons law that currently exists in Michigan because it allows law abiding citizens the right to defend themselves. |
